Not much could be found out about her: she was born in 1878 as Anna Schrutz and studied at the School of Applied Arts in Prague 1. There, she also took part in several exhibitions. She was a member of the Metznerbund (all links in German), an association of German-speaking artists in Czechoslovakia, as well as the Association of German Visual Artists in Bohemia and the German-Bohemian Artists’ Federation. She also designed bookplates and posters.
The picture shows a scene in a Dutch harbour. This is evident from the type of boat (flat-bottomed boat) and the traditional costumes, such as the klompen (wooden clogs). The location is thought to be the harbour on the island of Marken in the Zuiderzee (now the Markermeer) (approximate location on GeoHack). Comparative images can be found in the Zuiderzee Collection and on Wikimedia Commons. One example is the houses on the right-hand side. A further image from 1916 shows a denser development, suggesting that the illustration was probably created earlier.
From the end of the 19th century onwards, the island was frequently visited by artists.
