Etching byHelmut Bönitz

I found an etching by Helmut Bönitz (1914–1999) (on artnet) at Oxfam

Helmut Bönitz (1914–1999) was an artist from Göttingen, which is why he can also be found in Thomas Appel’s Göttingen Artists’ Lexicon. You can already find a collage of him on this blog

The etching is dated 1976 and shows the Jacobi Church (in German) in Göttingen in the top left-hand corner; it is signed and dated directly on the plate. Although it is difficult to make out in the image, the print was produced using several plates, giving it the appearance of a comic strip with individual panels.

The letter “b” between the towers refers to the famous engraving of the city by Matthäus Merian from 1654.
