Lithograph by Hermann Zapf (1918 - 2015)

A lithograph by Hermann Zapf (1918–2015) from my office…

Hermann Zapf (1918–2015) was a globally influential German typographer and calligrapher who created works such as this print. He initially completed an apprenticeship as a photo retoucher and subsequently taught himself typography. He not only designed well-known typefaces such as Optima, Palatino and Zapfino, but also the best-known set of decorative characters, Zapf Dingbats.

The saying “One must multiply the number of thoughts to such an extent that there are not enough guardians for them” comes from Jerzy Lec, a Polish aphorist. The text is written in a handwriting reminiscent of the Zapfino typeface.
